What inspired you to start growing spirulina?

I first learnt about spirulina in 2010, at a workshop organised in Málaga by members of the International Network of Spirulina Growers. I found it incredible that something so valuable to humanity was unknown to most people. A few months later, whilst passing through Barcelona, I was able to visit a spirulina farm at Can Mas Deu. I left with my first litre of culture and raring to get started. I took the spirulina to the occupied village of Artaso, in the Aragonese Pyrenees, where they wanted to start growing spirulina to help them achieve food sovereignty. They welcomed me there with great joy, and that’s how my first cultivation began. During this first experience, I realised that growing spirulina is not like growing lettuce. Although it is not a complex process, it is unlike any other crop I know of, nor can I rely on popular knowledge, as one might with a vegetable garden. Thanks to the incredible work of J.P. Jourdan in his ‘Manuel de Culture Artisanale de Spiruline’ and its adaptation and summary by the international network of spirulina growers, I was able to embark on a series of self-taught cultivation attempts, which led me to this project, sunspiru.com, where we are now ready to share our knowledge and harvest with the world.
