There are only three species of mammals with menopause, killer whales, short-finned pilot whales, and humans. They are the species with the most developed brains in the animal world. This is because their social behaviour is very complex and they need a very advanced and powerful component, the grandmother. Grandmothers are females that have survived their first three quarters of life and have matured the experience. Continuing to give birth would expose them to mortal risks, so nature has developed the menopause. Old, mature and experienced grandmothers can become the ‘gold dust’ of a community (Ct.
